English & Philosophy Program

The Department of English and Philosophy is one of four units comprising the College of Humanities and Interdisciplinary Studies.  Foreign Languages, Mass Communications, and Visual and Performing Arts are the other three.   Program offerings include a Bachelor of Arts in English, a minor in English, and graduate courses leading to a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in English.  The Department also fosters a diverse learning environment by offering courses in philosophy and providing student support services through its Developmental English classes and Communication Skills Laboratory.

Committed to the concept of a liberal education, the Department supports every four-year undergraduate program throughout the University by offering a broad spectrum of courses in English and Philosophy to fulfill general education and liberal arts requirements. The diverse curriculum also supports University efforts to meet the accreditation standards of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), teacher certification standards for secondary education in English as prescribed by the National Certification for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) board, and requirements of other accrediting agencies for degree programs in other disciplines.
